Why are cats afraid of cucumbers

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

You might have seen the video of cats panicking when they see a cucumber behind them. Well, it may not be what you think. One expert looked into why cats are afraid of cucumbers and the answer may not surprise you.

In the video above you can tell that every cat while looking away had a cucumber placed behind them. Once the cat turned around it noticed the cucumber and jumped, hit a wall or just loses its mind in fear.

Dr. Roger Mugford, a specialist in animal behavior, had this statement about this: “I think that the reaction is due to the novelty and unexpectedness of finding an unusual object secretly placed whilst their heads were down in the food bowl.”

Dr. Mugford makes sense as we would probably have the same type of response if something was placed behind us without know it was there. imagine a clown showing standing up behind after shutting the refrigerator door, what would you do?

Cats are already afraid of anything that moves too fast or makes a lot of noise, so they are skeptical animals. “Cats have to be suspicious of the unknown: It could represent the danger of a snake or another predator,” Mugford continued. “I suspect that there would be the same reaction to a model spider, a plastic fish or a human face mask.”

We may not know what is going through the cat's mind while seeing a cucumber, but we really will never understand cats. Cats are mostly solitary creatures while humans are on the far other end of the spectrum, one of the most social things on the planet. We are just two different species.
