BENSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

It’s been 60 years for the Benson Bobcats.

That’s the last time the tiny Cochise County school won a state championship in football.

It was five years before the AIA began actually calculating state championships.

The top-seed Bobcats (13-0) play #2 seed Glendale Joy Christian Saturday in the Division V championship game, a contest that will kickoff at 2 p.m. at Chaparral High School in Scottsdale.

The Bobcats are making their third appearance in the state championship since winning back-to-back titles in 1954 and 1955.

Benson lost to St. John’s in both 1978 and 1994.

The Eagles (12-0) in their third season playing Division V are in the title game for the first time after losing in the quarterfinals the last two seasons.

Joy Christian won the eight-man Division VI championship in 2012. The lost in the title game in 2011.
