McKale Center security enhancements

Tucson, AZ (KOLD) - Arizona Athletics announced a change in their security policies last week. Per Greg Byrne's Wildcat Wednesday email:

Arizona Athletics is instituting a newclear bag policy for all of its venues starting with the men’s basketball game on Wednesday, Dec. 9. The policy limits the size and type of bags that may be brought into our venues. The following is a list of bags that will be accepted for entry:

  • Bags that are clear plastic or vinyl and do not exceed 12” x 6” x 12”
  • One-gallon clear plastic freezer bags (Ziploc bag or similar)
  • Small clutch bags, approximately the size of a hand, after being searched
  • Exceptions will be made for medically necessary items after proper inspection, including but not limited to oxygen tanks, diabetes kits, allergy pens, etc.

In order to make this transition as convenient as possible, the University of Arizona BookStores will have clear bags available on the afternoon of Monday, Dec. 7. You can order them online now by clicking HERE. In addition, we will be providing clear Ziploc bags at the five entry points for the next two home men’s basketball games (Dec. 9 vs. Fresno St. and Dec. 12 vs. Missouri).

Prohibited bags include but are not limited to:

  • Purses larger than a clutch
  • Briefcases
  • Backpacks
  • Fanny packs
  • Diaper bags
  • Cinch bags
  • Luggage of any kind
  • Long golf umbrellas
  • Cooler bags
  • Computer bags
  • Camera bags
  • Non-approved seat cushions including large traditional seat cushions that have pockets, zippers, compartments or covers
  • Any bag larger than the permissible size, unless credentialed personnel carrying such belonging have been thoroughly searched

This is not a restriction on items that you have been able to bring into our venues; it is only a restriction on the type of container used to carry items. Your souvenir cups, unopened water, Kleenex and personal items will all be permitted into the arena if carried in one bag that meets the criteria listed above.

Personal items may be enclosed in a small clutch bag, approximately the size of a hand. These small bags will be searched. The no food and beverage policy will remain in effect, however, medically necessary items will be permitted after proper inspection.

We strongly believe that it made sense to adjust our policy to enhance public safety and make venue access more efficient by limiting the size and style of bags carried into the arena. Our policy has evolved so that we can continue to adjust to the realities of public safety.

In conjunction with the clear bag policy, we are implementing a new entry procedure for men’s basketball games at the McKale Center. We’ll be reducing the entry points into McKale, while enhancing the pre-entry search of all entering the arena. All fans are asked to open their jackets, remove hats and allow security to conduct a search of all persons and parcels. In addition, fans will be directed to one of five entrances where staffing and resources will be coordinated. Please see the map below to review the new entrances.

While there is no credible threat to the University, one major piece of our jobs is to stay vigilant and protect and serve the students, staff and patrons that comprise the University community. We follow the threat levels established by the federal government and given the international travel warning and recent international events, the change in bag policy, controlled entrances and enhanced search were necessary. Additional staffing and resources will be deployed to mitigate any concerns.

We encourage fans to come early and be patient as they enter the arena. While this may seem inconvenient to some, your safety and security is our highest priority. As a department, we work with UAPD, who regularly collaborates with local, state and federal authorities, to evaluate our security operations and flex plans accordingly. At this time, we have made the changes outlined above to ensure our athletic events are conducted in the safest possible manner.

We appreciate your cooperation with both the clear bag policy and the McKale entry procedure for men’s basketball.
