TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A 23-year-old man is facing charges after police said he slammed into a Tucson police cruiser early Wednesday morning on South Craycroft Road, just south of East Broadway Boulevard. 

Tucson police officers responded to the collision around 2 a.m., according to a news release.

The police cruiser suffered severe damage to the rear of the vehicle, and a pickup truck was overturned and lying on its roof.

The officer involved in the crash has been identified as Laura Shope, a two-and-a-half year veteran of the Tucson Police Department. She was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and released. 

The driver of the pickup truck, identified as Cody Tucker, was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries. His passenger had minor injuries as well, but was not taken to the hospital. 

After Tucker was released from the hospital, he was immediately booked into the Pima County Jail on the following charges:

  • Two counts of felony endangerment
  • One count of felony criminal damage
  • One count of aggravated DUI
  • and one count of operating a vehicle without ignition interlock device as required - while DUI.

According to TPD officials, the driver of the truck was traveling at a high rate of speed, and rear-ended the TPD cruiser.
