SOCCER: Walden Grove girls end Palo Verde's run

SAHUARITA, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Walden Grove made a statement Wednesday night that they are still the queens of Division III soccer in Arizona.

The 5th ranked Red Wolves behind a hat-trick performance from junior forward Isabella Solorza beat #2 Palo Verde 5-2, ending the Titans 17-match win streak to start the season.

Walden Grove (18-3) staked themselves to a two-nil advantage in the first half behind goals from Solorza and senior forward Daelyn Mayer.

But Palo Verde (17-1) showed their fight in the second scoring on an impressive steal and run out by Jackie Igulu.

The Red Wolves though quickly stole the momentum right back on Solorza’s second goal to make it 3-1.

Igulu scored again with 15 minutes left to give Palo Verde a ray of hope that they might be able to continue their streak but Solorza tallied her third goal in the 71st minute, racing away from the Titans defense and pounding home a left-footer off a perfectly placed pass by Mayer.

Walden Grove went 25-1 last season to win the Division III state championship; the first team state title in the short existence of the school.

Solorza was named the Division III Player of the Year.

The Red Wolves three losses this season have all been to Division II teams in Salpointe Catholic and two defeats to Ironwood Ridge.
