Pima ladies rank highest in Tucson

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Who’s the highest ranked college basketball team in Tucson?

It’s not A Player’s Program.

The highest ranked college basketball team in Tucson is the ladies crew playing up on West Anklam Road.

Pima College (17-3) won for the 11th consecutive game on Wednesday night. The Aztecs are currently the seventh ranked Division II women’s team in the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Todd Holthaus is in his ninth season leading PCC and he’s winning this year with a lineup dominated by local talent.

Nine of the 15 players listed on the Aztecs roster played their high school basketball in Southern Arizona.

Leading scorer Syndi Stallworth (13.3) was one of the best prep players in the city as a senior last season at Palo Verde. The point guard on Tuesday was named the conference Player of the Week for the third time this season.

Cienega product Denesia Smith is Pima’s second leading scorer (12.1).

Gabby Banales (Cienega), Shalise Fernander (Flowing Wells) and Erin Peterson (Catalina Foothills) also have large roles on this year’s team.

The Aztecs are currently in second place in the ACCAA, trailing Eastern Arizona by one game. Pima will host the Lady Monsters at the West Campus on Wednesday, February 3 at 5:30 p.m.

EAC handed PCC their only conference loss (75-70) back on December 5.
