TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (19-5, 13-3 in ACCAC) fell behind early in the fourth quarter and couldn’t recover on Wednesday against Eastern Arizona College (17-7, 14-2) in a battle of the first place teams in the ACCAC.

The Aztecs lost 77-69 as the Gila Monsters went on a 9-0 run that carried from the end of the third quarter into the fourth. Pima trailed 55-53 and fell behind 64-53 with 8:34 left in the game and couldn’t get closer than eight points in the end.

Freshman Sydni Stallworth (Palo Verde HS) finished the game with 20 points and four steals while sophomore Taylor Blue (Peoria HS) had 16 points and eight rebounds.

The Aztecs were swept in their head-to-head meetings this season with Eastern Arizona. They lost 75-70 last month in Thatcher.

Meanwhile the Aztecs men’s basketball team (14-10, 9-7 in ACCAC) clawed out a 81-78 win against Eastern Arizona College (17-7, 10-6).

Down 76-75 with 2:03 left in the game, sophomore Yusef Shehata (Amphitheater HS) scored under the basket and on the next play for Eastern Arizona, he stole the ball and found freshman Kwintin Williams down-court. Williams threw it down with a one-handed dunk to put Pima ahead 79-76.

Williams scored a game-high 25 points and had eight rebounds while sophomore Justice Martion finished with 20 points and eight boards off the bench. He scored eight straight points to keep the Aztecs ahead in the second half. Shehata contributed with 19 points.

The Aztecs avenged their 101-80 December loss to the Gila Monsters in Thatcher.

Both Pima Basketball squads will play another three games on the road. They will be at Cochise College in Douglas on Saturday, beginning with the women’s game at 5:30 p.m.
