GIRLS: Pueblo spanks Vista Grande to win Section title

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

It’s not the end of the road but it’s a pretty great place to stop and take in the view.

Three years after ending the season with the just four wins, the Pueblo High School girls’ basketball team showed how far they’ve come with a resounding 87-31 win over Vista Grande to clinch the program’s first Section Championship in as long as local prep historians can remember.

It is believed to be at least 20-plus years since a Warriors’ girls team was in this position.

Araceli Loya and Alicia Reyes led Pueblo (22-3, 12-0) with 19 points each.

The 7th ranked Warriors finish a game in front of Safford (25-2, 11-1), who they beat Tuesday, and will have the #1 seed in next week’s Division III Section III six-team tournament at Desert View.

Much like an NCAA post-season conference tournament, the winner of the section tournament gets an automatic berth to the state tournament.

Pueblo coach Ismael Galindo is in his fourth season at the school. Those four wins came in his first season 2012-13. The Warriors won 10 games in his second season and have arrived the past two years with back-to-back 22-win campaigns.

Pueblo finished 2nd in their section last season as a Division II team but were dropped down to Division III this season due to the state realignment.
