SOCCER: Top-seed Salpointe girls end Sahuaro's season

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Top seed Salpointe Catholic is in the state final four.

The Lancers used stellar backend defense to shut down Sahuaro for a 2-1 win Saturday at Doherty Stadium in a Division II quarterfinal.

Salpointe Catholic (22-1) got goals from Kalista Kakou and Paloma Teran.

The win avenged the Lancers only loss of the season, a 1-0 setback to the Cougars back on December 30.

Salpointe Catholic will play crosstown rival Ironwood Ridge in the state semifinals on Tuesday night.

That game will likely be played at a neutral site in Southern Arizona.

The semifinals in Division II will also include Catalina Foothills. The 7th seeded but tournament-seasoned Falcons upset #2 seed Willow Canyon 2-1 to advance to a date with 3rd seed Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep.
