TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

It might have been an exhibition friendly but it had the feel of a whole lot more.

The Portland Timbers beat their arch-rivals the Seattle Sounders 2-1 Saturday night in front of a packed house at Kino North Stadium.

The Sounders-Timbers rivalry is one of the best in Major League Soccer. Both sides have rabid fan bases and that was on display in Tucson.

The Timbers Army, reanointed the Timbers Army Desert Corp for their team’s winter stay in the Old Pueblo, chanted throughout the game.

Sounders fans although not quite as loud and unified were present as well in large numbers.

The match was scoreless through the first 45 minutes.

Seattle broke the stalemate in the 53rd minute when Darwin Jones beat Timbers defender Taylor Peay and then goal tender Adam Kwarasey for a one-nil advantage.

New Portland striker Jack McInerney provided the equalizer in the 53rd minute when he scored on a cross from Andy Thoma.

McInerney, playing in his first season with the Timbers after spending his first six seasons with the Philadelphia Union, Montreal Impact and Columbus Crew, broke the stalemate late (’85) when he pounded home another nice feed. This one from Peay.

Action continues on Tuesday at Kino North Stadium when the Seattle Sounders FC and Celaya FC will be playing a one-off match.

This the first match in Tucson between an Ascenso MX team and MLS team since Sounders FC played an exciting draw against Veracruz in 2013.

Sounders FC and Los Toros will be squaring off at 7:00 p.m.

Celaya FC is based out of Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico, and was reformed in 2007. The historic team plays in the Ascenso MX league.
