SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC) -

An off-duty Memphis police officer shot someone in Southaven on Monday.

Police said the person was shot after he kicked in a door during a burglary. Off-duty officer Brian Falatko saw him and shot him in the shoulder. The suspected burglar has been taken to the hospital. He is expected to be OK.

Neighbors said they heard three shots come from the home on Chandler Drive at noon Monday.

"I was very scared for Brian; that was weighing heavy on my mind," one neighbor said.

"I saw them carrying a guy on a stretcher," neighbor Todd Rosamond said.

Rosamond said he did not know  if the man he saw bleeding in a yard was his neighbor or not.

"I could hear moans and groans," Rosamond said. "And he was kind of hollering a little bit, so apparently he'd been shot, but I didn't know who shot who."

Neighbors also said they saw the officer running out the door holding his two toddlers and brought them to a neighbor’s house for safety after the shooting.

Investigators said the officer does not live at the house, but he was visiting his children at the house when the burglar tied to break in the back door.

Property records show the home belongs to Falatko’s wife.

This is not the officer's first time being involved in altercations.

In 2013, Falatko was involved in an altercation in front of BB King’s. Two officers were trying to break up a disturbance, and when Falatko got out of the car to arrest one of the men, the man’s head went through a glass window.

Two years prior, Falatko was the victim of an aggravated assault. He was hit by a car while directing traffic at the intersection of Beale Street and Front Street.

Neighbors said they are happy the officer is OK, but they still feel uneasy and will be keeping a close eye on their surroundings.

"I think he got what he deserved for breaking into a home," Rosamond said.

Neighbor Dalton O'Neal said the intruder must have thought the home was empty.

"People's doors are locked for people outside, their safety, not the people inside," O'Neal said. "Especially in Mississippi or anywhere around."

Falatko was previously named Officer of the Year for MPD.

Police are still investigating the incident.
