SOCCER: Flowing Wells falls; Pueblo advances

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Cortez High School scored early and they scored often.

The #6-seed Colts raced to a three-nothing lead on 2nd-seeded Flowing Wells and held off the Caballeros for a 3-1 win Wednesday night at Tucson High’s Gridley Stadium in the Division III Boys State Soccer Tournament semifinal.

The Colts advance to the state championship match on Saturday against defending champion Yuma Catholic.

The Cabs (13-5-1) lone goal came from Edgar Venalonzo on a penalty kick late in the first half.

In Division IV, Pueblo is advancing to the state championship match.

The Warriors shutout Glendale Prep 3-0 and will play for their first ever title.

Pueblo is a scoring machine right now. The Warriors have outscored their opponents 15-2 in three post-season matches and have scored 46 goals the last seven times they’ve hit the pitch.

The #2 seed Warriors head to Williams Field High School in Gilbert on Saturday to face 5th-seeded Buckeye at 1:30 p.m.
