BOYS: Zero-for-Glendale

GLENDALE, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Three Southern Arizona teams went to Glendale’s Gila River Arena Wednesday with dreams of the Division II State Final Four dancing in their heads.

It’s a dream that will have to wait another year.

Nogales, Sunnyside and Catalina Foothills all came up empty in their quest to reach the semifinal round of the state basketball tournament.

#21 Nogales (18-11) lost to Paradise Valley 52-51. Adalberto and Jose Estrada combined to score 44 of the Apaches 51 points.

Sunnyside was the highest seeded team to lose at #6. The Blue Devils fell to Peoria Sunrise Mountain 80-77 in double overtime.

Mikey Silva scored 27 for Sunnyside (23-6) while Jacob Inclan added 22 points with 12 rebounds.

Elijah Thomas poured in 30 for the Mustangs (19-11).

#10 Catalina Foothills (21-9) also saw their dreams end in overtime with a 61-59 loss to Agua Fria.

The Owls won the game at the buzzer on a turn around jump shot by Darnell Cowart over the Falcons Liam Giffin.

Talented sophomore Sam Beskind led Foothills with 25 points and 10 rebounds.

Southern Arizona schools for the week are zero-for-four in games at Home of the Arizona Coyotes. The Sahuaro Girls fell in their Division II quarterfinal game to Mesa on Tuesday. A game in which the Cougars shot a miserable 14 percent with guard Reazsha Benjamin finishing 0-for-16 from the field.

The Pueblo Girls will play a Division III quarterfinal at Gila River Arena at 1:30 on Thursday against South Mountain.
