The Arizona Wildcats lost one of their greatest this week when Dr. Gayle Hopkins passed away.
Known simply and affectionately as “Doc Hop”, Hopkins was the school’s first national champion in any sport when he took the NCAA long jump title in 1964.
He would go on to make the United States Olympic team later that summer and compete in the Tokyo Games.
Hopkins returned to his alma mater in 1983 to work in the academic services area of the Athletics department.
He would stay for 27 years serving as a mentor for many of the school’s athletes.
Hopkins is survived by his wife Patricia, daughter Alissa (UA ’92) and son, Chris.
Services will be Monday, March 28, 2016 at Brings Funeral Home located at 6910 E. Broadway Blvd in Tucson.
Public viewing will begin at 10:00 am, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 am.
