SB: Casey Stangel hits and pitches UW past Arizona

SEATTLE, WA -

No. 18 Arizona softball dropped game 2 of the three game series as No. 11 Washington earned a 6-2 victory to even the series in Seattle.

The Wildcats (23-11, 5-3 Pac-12) fell into an early 3-0 hole when UW pitcher Casey Stangel hit a three-run opposite field homer with two out in the bottom of the third inning.

It would be all the support she and closer Madi Schreyer would need as the Husky duo limited Arizona's offense to just two runs on five hits. UW (22-8, 3-5 Pac-12) added three runs of insurance in the sixth for good measure.

The Wildcats plated two runs in the sixth inning, but stranded the tying run at third in the frame.

Taylor McQuillin (8-5) pitched 5.2 innings and allowed six runs on nine hits to one of the nation's top offenses. She walked three and struck out seven in the start. Nancy Bowling entered to get the final out of the sixth.

McQuillin's counterpart was dominant early, retiring the first 10 batters of the game. Arizona finally plated a pair of runs in the sixth off Stangel (3-2), who went 5.2 innings and gave up two runs on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Schreyer earned her first save of the season by recording the final four outs of the game.

After pitching out of a two-on, one out situation in the second, McQuillin was unable to do so in the third as Stangel hit a three-run opposite field home run with two out to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead.

Arizona, meanwhile, did not have its first base runner against Stangel until a one-out error in the fourth. Mo Mercado notched a two-out double to break up the no-hit bid, but Statman grounded out to end the threat.

The Cats got on the board in the sixth when a walk and two singles loaded the bases with two out. Lauren Young singled to center to plate a pair and chase Stangel. With the tying run 60 feet away, Joelle Krist struck out to end the inning.

Washington responded immediately with three runs in the sixth to make the deficit insurmountable for the Cats.

Up Next: Arizona and Washington will decide the series on Monday at 7 p.m. MST.
