Epic rally by The Witts powers UA past ASU

Seventh-ranked Arizona Sand Volleyball (14-3) defeated their rival to the north, Arizona State (4-1) on Senior Day, Thursday afternoon in front of a record breaking crowd of 563.

Seniors Nikki Attea, Kalei Mau, Jianna Bonomi and Katarina Schulz were all presented with roses from head coach Steve Walker and assistant coach Tayyiba Haneef-Park. The ladies took the sand with family and friends as they would be entering BearDown Beach for the last time.

Arizona State’s senior Logan Rae will also be honored and presented with flowers.

Cats won four of the matches in straight sets and fell to ASU in one match, finishing 4-1.

The No. 1 team of Madison and McKenna Witt took the match to three sets after a hard fought battle they defeated the team of Bianca Arellano and Whitney Follette, (14-21, 21-15, 22-20). 

Jianna Bonomi and Kat Schulz, the Wildcats’ No. 2 pair, got a victory over Sun Devils Kwyn Johnson and Sydney Palmer in straight sets, (21-15, 21-14).

Arizona State’s No. 4 team of Bethany Wedepohl and Jourdan Parnell picked up a win against Mia Mason and Kalei Mau in a tough fight, (13-21, 23-25).

The Wildcats’ No. 3 duo of Sam Manley and Olivia Macdonald snatched a win after a three set rally against the Sun Devils’ Mia Rivera and Madison Berridge (21-23, 21-18, 15-6).

Hailey Devlin and MacKenzie Kleespies secured the sweep in straight sets beating ASU's No. 5 team of Logan Rae and Frances Giedraitis (21-10, 21-17). 

Arizona’s exhibition team of Tyler Lucas and Nikki Attea earned a victory over the No. 6 team of Blair Robalin and Natalie Braun in consecutive sets, (21-17, 21-18).

This was The Wildcats last home match as they now hold a (8-0) home record and (14-3) overall.
