Seventeenth-ranked Arizona softball posted 11 hits, its most in conference play this year, and Arizona downed Stanford 5-3 in game 1 of the three-game series.
The top three hitters in Arizona’s lineup, Mandie Perez, Ashleigh Hughes and Katiyana Mauga, combined to reach base 10 times; the trio each had two hits. Mauga drove in her team-high 46th RBI of the season.
Danielle O’Toole picked up her 15th complete game of the season and her Pac-12 best 17th victory of the season. The junior allowed three runs, two earned, on just four hits with three strikeouts and four walks.
Arizona (29-12, 6-4 Pac-12) scored four of its runs with two out while O’Toole kept Stanford (13-21, 0-10 Pac-12) hitless with two out (0-for-7).
The Wildcats have now won the first game of every Pac-12 series this season; UA is 6-4 in conference play this year.
Two walks and a single loaded the bases with no one out in the top of the first inning. UA would plate two runs with a couple of ground balls; Mo Mercado drove in the first run with a groundout and Alexis Dotson drove in a run with an infield single to put Arizona ahead 2-0.
After O'Toole got out of a runner-at-third, one-out situation in the bottom of the first, the Cats added on in the second. Katiyana Mauga singled home Eva Watson with two out to put the Cats on top 3-0.
In the bottom half, a walk and a single put two on for the Cardinal. Both runners scored on an error to cut the Wildcat lead to 3-2.
A Lauren Young sacrifice play put Arizona on top 4-2 in the third.
After Stanford cut the lead to one with a solo homer in the top of the fifth, Tamara Statman singled home Ashleigh Hughes with two outs in the top of the sixth to put Arizona up 5-3.
