MARANA, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Justice Summerset told me three weeks ago that he felt like he could break the Arizona state high jump record of seven-feet-two inches before the end of the prep season.

He did just that on Saturday at the Southern Arizona Track and Field Championships, held on his home track at Mountain View High School in Marana.

Summerset on his third and final attempt jumped seven-feet-two and a half inches to not only shatter the 27-year old state record (Gabriel Beecham-Casa Grande-1989), but set the top national high school mark for this season.

It’s the third time this season that the Mountain Lions senior and 2016 UA signee has cleared the seven-foot plateau.

Summerset is the only jumper in Arizona to clear seven-feet this season.
