ASU clinches Territorial Cup series

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The Territorial Cup Series trophy is staying in Tempe.

Arizona State clinched the series for a third straight year Sunday when the Sun Devils’ men’s golf team finished third to Arizona’s tenth at the Pac-12 Championships in Salt Lake City this weekend.

The win gave ASU 10.5 points in the 20-sport showdown. The Sun Devils now lead the Wildcats by four full points with just three sports (Baseball, Women and Men’s Outdoor Track and Field) remaining.

It’s the third straight year Arizona State has won the series, and some contend fourth straight if you count 2012-13.

Both claimed victory that year due to a disputed point in Men’s Indoor Track and Field, a sport that had not been previously counted.

The sport is counted now as is Sand Volleyball, raising the original total from 18 sports to 20, therefore under the current format ASU has beaten the Wildcats in four consecutive athletic years.

This after UA won the trophy in each of the series first three years of existence.

The competition began with the 2009-10 athletic year.
