Gigi Stoll Leads Wildcats in Day One at NCAA Regionals

TUCSON, Ariz.  – The University of Arizona women’s golf team began play at the NCAA Bryan Regional at the Traditions Golf Club on Thursday in Bryan, Texas. After the first round, the Wildcats are in a tie for first place, carding a team score of 285 (-5).

Freshman Gigi Stoll was at the helm, carding seven birdies throughout her opening round. This was the most birdies out of any player on the course. She finished at 69 (-3), to give her a share of third place. She is only two strokes behind the leader Bianca Pagdanganan from Gonzaga.

“I started off today really well by birdieing four of my first five holes,” said Stoll. “My first thought was to not get ahead of myself and control each shot at a time. I made a few silly mistakes throughout the round that resulted in a few too many bogies. Overall, I can’t be upset with a 69, but after seven birdies I expect a little bit more out of the round. Fortunately, there are 36 more holes out there.”

Sophomore Krystal Quihuis followed suit, notching a 71 (-1) on the links. She is holding a share of 14th place. Senior Lindsey Weaver finished with a 72 (E) for part of the tie for 20th place. Junior Jessica Vasilic earned a 73 (+1), and is currently holding a share of 28th place. Freshman Haley Moore posted a 76 (+4) after the round. She is in a tie for 60th place.

Stoll’s 69 (-3) ties her personal record for a round at the University of Arizona. The last came two weeks ago at the Pac-12 Championships, where she notched the same score in the second round. Stoll is looking for her first top-10 finish at Arizona.

As the No. 3 seed in the competition, the Cats are tied with No. 2 Georgia and four strokes above No. 1 UCLA. This puts them in a strong position to push ahead in the next two rounds. Stoll, Quihuis, and Weaver are all holding in the top-20 of the competition, and posed within striking distance of a victory. Vasilic is only one stroke away from that top-20 range as well.

Arizona tees-off at 7:50 a.m. PST on Friday. For live scoring of the NCAA Bryan Regional, visit the GolfStat website at
