O'Toole's Shutout Propels Arizona in Game 1

TUCSON, Ariz. - Danielle O'Toole struck out a season-high nine batters while pitching her sixth shutout of the season, leading Arizona to a 6-0 victory over Oregon State in game 1 on Saturday at Hillenbrand Stadium.

Ashleigh Hughes had two of Arizona's five hits against Oregon State pitcher Meehra Nelson (L, 15-8). Nelson and O'Toole (W, 19-10) dueled through five innings until the Cats (33-17, 10-9 Pac-12) plated four runs in the sixth inning to break it open.

The shutout was O’Toole’s third of the conference season and added to her conference-leading win total. She’s one victory from becoming Arizona’s first 20-game winner since 2012 (Shelby Babcock, 21). She combined her season-high nine strikeouts with zero walks. The junior allowed six hits, but three of the baserunners were retired on the base paths by the UA defense.

Arizona was hitless until the third inning, when Mandie Perez hit a wind-aided triple to plate Eva Watson. Ashleigh Hughes followed with a bloop RBI single to put Arizona on top 2-0.

Joelle Krist hit her sixth home run of the season, an 0-2, opposite-field homer in the sixth inning.

The Wildcats’ defense was on full display on Friday afternoon, as the Cats turned two double plays and Lauren Young threw out a would-be base stealer, helping O’Toole face just three over the minimum despite allowing six hits.

Oregon State (27-17-1, 6-13 Pac-12), meanwhile, committed a trio of errors.

The victory was Arizona’s seventh straight over Oregon State.

Up Next: Arizona and Oregon State meet Saturday in game 2 at 2 p.m. MST on the Pac-12 Networks.
