K&N West racing tour stops in Tucson

VAIL, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The K&N West Series is back in Tucson for a second straight year since the return of the NASCAR affiliation to Tucson Speedway.

The NAPA Wildcat 150 will be the feature race with twenty-four K&N race cars on the track for the only race in Arizona, this season.

The NASCAR K&N Pro Series is NASCAR’s premiere developmental league that hosts “tomorrow’s stars, today.” The series holds separate championships in the East and West.

Alumni include Daytona 500 champion Joey Logano (2007 NASCAR K&N Pro West race winner at Phoenix International Raceway and 2007 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East champion), 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Kevin Harvick (1998 NASCAR K&N Pro West champion) as well as drivers such as Kyle Larson, Austin Dillon and Chase Elliott.

Tucsonans Ron Norman and Matt Levin will be driving in the event on Saturday.  Last year both men participated as rookies in the K&N Pro Series West and raced against sixty-seven competitors.

Norman ended up 12th in points, he held the pole position in Tucson and finished with one Top 10 finish.  Levin ended up 11th in points in the series, he had two Top 10 finishes and was awarded the Coca Cola Move of the Race, in Bakersfield.  Matt was the only driver in the series to be upside down in his car on the track.

Seventeen year old Noah Gragson is back to defend his title at Tucson. He won two races in 2015, his inaugural season on the circuit.

Fifteen year old, teen driver, Todd Gilliland, will be racing for his 4th K&N Pro Series win this year. He’s won both races on the West circuit (Irwindale and Bakersfield).

Julia Landauer, a graduate from Stanford University and a contestant on the television series “Survivor”, will be racing to beat her best finish, 8th at Irwindale on March 19th of this year.

Chris Eggleston won the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Championship in 2015 and is back to defend his title.

Jesse Iwuji is driving for the first time this season on the K&N West tour. The active Naval officer played football for the Midshipmen (’06-’09) and is based in Monterey, California.

Grand Marshall of the race is Ken Clapp, former Senior Vice President of NASCAR West Coast Operations and founder of the West Coast Stock Hall of Fame.  Ken has been involved with stock car racing for 60 years.

Gates open at 5 p.m. for K&N cars, modifieds, trucks and mini stocks qualifying. Racing starts at 7 p.m. for modifieds, trucks and mini stocks.

The K&N cars race starts at 8:30 p.m.
