U.S. Forest Service: Closure of Pena Blanca Lake lifted

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The closure order for Pena Blanca Lake, which began last week, has been lifted according to a release from the U.S. Forest Service, just in time for Memorial Day weekend.

Pena Blanca Lake had been closed while fire fighters worked to control the La Sierra Fire.

According to U.S. Forest Service officials the perimeter closure has also been lifted, it was enacted while crews worked to contain the fire.  The fire perimeter is west of Nogales, between Walker Canyon and Sycamore Canyon south of Ruby Road to the international border.

Visitors to the area should be aware that fire fighting vehicles might be encountered in the area, they will be patrolling for additional smoke sources over the next week and possibly into the weekend.
U.S. Forest Service officials would like to remind visitors to be fire wise in the weeks leading up to the monsoon.  This means do not build fires on windy days if possible, be mindful of actions that might cause a spark that could possibly lead to another fire. Be sure to properly dispose of smoking materials, outdoor welding, dragging tow chains and vehicle catalytic convertors being parked in tall grass.  Each of these things has the potential to cause another wildfire.
