The University of Arizona is set to close out the regular season in Honolulu, Hi. with a three-game series against the University of Hawaii.
The Cats took a pair of midweek games from Abilene Christian on Tuesday and Wednesday to improve to 35-20 in coach Jay Johnson’s first season at Arizona.
The Cats especially thrived at Hi Corbett Field, going 23-7 and posting a staff ERA of 2.25.
Arizona is hopeful it isn’t done playing games at Hi Corbett this season and a strong performance this weekend against Hawaii could help that become reality. The athletic department put in a bid to be a regional host and has the resume to back it up with a Top 25 RPI, an 11-8 mark against RPI Top 50 teams and a challenging nonconference schedule, which ranked ninth in the country.
For the final series of the regular season, Arizona has tinkered with its rotation in a small way. Left-hander JC Cloney, who leads the team with a 2.55 ERA, will start Friday. Nathan Bannister will follow on Saturday with Sunday’s Game 3 starter to be determined.
Cloney and Bannister have been a force at the top of the rotation for the Cats this season, combining to go 13-5 on the season..
The Cats are hopeful slugger Bobby Dalbec is hitting a strong and productive stretch for the Wildcats. He went 3 for 3 in Wednesday’s win over Abilene Christian and is 4 for his last six at the plate, combined.
The Rainbow Warriors will counter with a pair of righties and one left-hander...The two righties, Kyle Von Ruden and Brendan Hornung, both have identical 3.09 ERAs on the season. Left-hander Alex Hatch, will start the Saturday game, in between the two right-handers.
Overall, Hawaii is 23-27 on the season. The Rainbow Warriors took two of three at Cal-State Fullerton last week and come into the series this weekend for their final three games of the season.
