A local high school student’s artwork will soon be on display at the U.S. Capitol. 16-year-old Carolina Figueroa attends Tucson Magnet High School.

After encouragement from her art teacher, she entered Congressman Raul Grijalva’s art competition.

Her drawing is a pencil sketch of her cousin.  She said it was a challenging piece that shows shadows and depth.  Carolina said she found out that she won through an email.

“I read it and I said please. That’s the first word I saw, pleased to inform you, I thought okay I won! I told my mom and she didn’t believe me. It was exciting,”
Carolina Figueroa said.

Carolina’s artwork will be on display at the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. for one year. Another perk to winning first place, Carolina will get a free trip
to D.C. this summer to see her artwork on display. She is bringing her brother along on the trip.
