After eight seasons at the front of the Arizona Wildcats’ Women’s Basketball program, Niya Butts’ tenure came to an end at the conclusion of the 2015-16 season.
At the end of the day for any coach at any high level, the wins and losses dictate whether or not you remain in a job for a long period of time.
The record (102-147) won’t show a level that coincides with success and UA won just 24% of their Pac-12 games (34-110) while under Butts’ direction.
But she lasted longer than most and that’s a byproduct of her work ethic and extremely inviting personality.
I had the privilege of sitting down with Butts this month for one final conversation before she departed Tucson to return to the position she had prior to coming to the Old Pueblo in 2008, as an assistant for the women’s team at the University of Kentucky.
