The downtown redevelopment group known as Rio Nuevo has made some big deals lately that will benefit all of us.

They are helping Caterpillar build a $50 million corporate headquarters in Tucson involving hundreds of jobs. And KOLD News 13 was the first to tell you about the Rio Nuevo deal that is bringing a pro hockey team to town.

Rio Nuevo is also involved in other big deals, including a downtown hotel and development on the west side. This is a big turnaround for an organization that used to be ridiculed for big ideas but marginal results involving millions of dollars' worth of our tax money. Some of you may remember the plans more than a decade ago for a downtown aquarium, a baseball stadium, and even a so-called "rainbow bridge."

But that was then, and now it's time to give credit to Rio Nuevo for finally showing results. Let's hope they can keep this momentum going.
