Arizona MBB releases non-conference schedule

TUCSON, Ariz. – Head coach Sean Miller and the Arizona Basketball program have officially released the non-conference portion of its 2016-17 schedule, and it will give the Wildcats five games against NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago with another three against other postseason participants.

UA will face Michigan State, Gonzaga, Texas A&M and Cal State Bakersfield from the 2016 NCAA Tournament field with an additional game against either Vanderbilt or Butler in the Las Vegas Invitational. Texas Southern, UC Irvine and Grand Canyon also ended their 2015-16 seasons in postseason tournaments.

The unofficial start of the year begins with the 2016 McDonald’s Red-Blue game on Friday, Oct. 14. The annual intersquad event has a limited number of tickets still available.

Arizona will open the season with a pair of exhibitions in the McKale Center versus the College of Idaho and Chico State on Tuesday, Nov. 1 and Sunday, Nov. 6. The regular season opener will be against the Michigan State Spartans in the Armed Forces Classic in Honolulu on Friday, Nov. 11.

The Wildcats will have four home dates in the month of November with Cal State Bakersfield (Nov. 15), Sacred Heart (Nov. 18), Northern Colorado (Nov. 21), and Texas Southern (Nov. 30). UA will also play two games away from Tucson in November as part of the Continental Tires Las Vegas Invitational field versus Santa Clara (Nov. 24) and Vanderbilt or Butler (Nov. 25) in Orleans Arena.

December will begin with UA facing Gonzaga in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame event on Saturday, Dec. 3 in the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. UC Irvine and Grand Canyon visit the McKale Center on Dec. 6 and Dec. 14 respectively.  The Wildcats will travel to Missouri (Dec. 10) to face the Tigers and to Houston to square off with Texas A&M (Dec. 17).

The non-conference finale will feature a renewal of one of Arizona’s oldest rivalries when the New Mexico Lobos return to Tucson on Tuesday, Dec. 20. UNM is Arizona’s second-oldest rivalry, behind Arizona State, with 125 games played in the series that dates back to 1917.

The rest of the Wildcats’ schedule will be released later this summer when the Pac-12 Conference announces the league’s conference slate of games.
