Birchak refines boxing skills for Las Vegas UFC bout

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

It’s a huge week on the UFC scene as three nights of fights will take center stage in Las Vegas, Nevada at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

The weekend will commence on Thursday with Fight Night 90, which will feature eight bouts including a bantamweight tilt headlined by Sahuarita-native Anthony Birchak.

Birchak (12-3) will face Dileno Lopes (18-2) in his 4th UFC fight. The 2004 Sahuarita High School grad is 1-2 since signing with MMA’s top fighting platform.

He is coming off a knockout loss last November to Thomas Almeida.

This will be Lopez second UFC fight (0-1).

Birchak joined our David Kelly in studio to chat about his preparation for the bout which has included a return to training with his original boxing coach Amos Sotelo. Look for more of DK's in-depth conversation with Anthony later this week as we lead up to his appearance in the Octagon on Thursday night.

The weekend comes to a crescendo on Saturday night with UFC 200. An 11-bout card with such big names as Brock Lesnar, Meisha Tate, TJ Dillashaw, Jose Aldo and the main event, a light heavyweight title rematch between current champion Daniel Cormier (17-1) and Jon “Bones” Jones (22-1).

Jones beat Cormier in a five-round decision back in January of 2015, but was stripped of his belt by UFC in April of 2015 for disciplinary reasons. Cormier won the vacant championship back in May of 2015 when he beat Anthony Johnson.
