TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Anthony Birchak went the distance for the first time in his UFC career on Thursday night.

Birchak defeated opponent Dileno Lopes in a split decision of their three-round bantamweight bout at UFC Fight Night 90 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

It was the Sahuarita High School (’04) grad’s fourth fight with UFC. Birchak’s (13-3 MMA, 2-2 UFC) previous three fights all ended in the first round.

It was just the fourth time overall, Birchak has had to go the distance as a professional.

Lopes (18-3 MMA, 0-2 UFC) lost for the second time since being signed to MMA’s top United States circuit.

The judges scorecard’s read 29-28, 29-28 and 27-30 with the third judge giving all three rounds of Lopes.

Birchak fights in the same bantamweight division where the current champion is fellow Tucsonan Dominick Cruz.
