Saguaros making strong first impression

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Baseball is back in the Old Pueblo.

The Tucson Saguaros are playing their first season this summer in the independent Pecos League.

The Pecos League comprises eight teams primarily located in Kansas, Colorado, Texas and New Mexico.

The Saguaros are the lone team in Arizona and play in the league’s South division. They currently lead the division at the midway point of the season.

There were formally Pecos League teams in Douglas and Bisbee, Arizona. The Saguaros play their home games at Kino North Stadium as well as Sunday afternoon contests at Bisbee’s historic Warren Ballpark.

They are one of three new teams in the league this season along with Great Bend and Salina, Kansas.

Our David Kelly checked out a Saguaros game this week and chatted with manager JD Droddy, first baseman Ryan Retz and relief pitcher Jose “Pepe” Gomez.

Retz played high school baseball at Canyon del Oro before playing at Pima College and High Point University in North Carolina.

Gomez is a Sunnyside High School product who also played for the Aztecs before finishing out his collegiate career at Oral Roberts University in Oklahoma.

This is the sixth season of the Pecos League. The Roswell Invaders have won three championships (2011, 2013 and 2015).
