PDL: FC Tucson is best in the west

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A record-setting year for FC Tucson continued Wednesday night at Kino North Stadium as the PDL side wrapped up the #1 seed in the Western Conference playoffs with a resounding 5-0 win over the Albuquerque Sol.

The positive result earns FC Tucson (10-1-2, 32 points) a first round bye in the postseason which means they immediately advance to the conference semifinals which could be played again in Tucson.

FC Tucson has hosted the Western Conference regional round in each of the last two seasons.

The victory also secured the side's first Southwest division title and third division crown in a row overall (2 Mountain Division titles).

The Men in White took the lead just five minutes into the match when Carlos Delgadillo scored the first of his two goals on a penalty kick.

The PK came as a result of a foul against FC Tucson forward Tate Schmitt inside the box.

Delgadillo scored again in the 27th minute off a pass by Kalem Scott.

Scott was acquired in a transfer earlier in the day from the Kitsap Pumas. The defender was an integral part of the FC Tucson 2015 squad that advanced to the Western Conference finals.

Afonso Pinheiro sent FCT to the break with a 3-0 advantage when he put an unbelievable stop-and-go move on Sol defender Travis Campbell and then beat goal keeper Theo Hooker.

Pinheiro and (University of Albany) collegiate teammate Pedro Espindola netted goals in a second half marred by an altercation that saw Albuquerque forward Jack Clancy receive a red card.

FC Tucson retains the Golden Rattler trophy for a third consecutive year. They began playing Albuquerque (3-9-2, 11 points) in what has been billed the Southwest Showdown in 2014. FC Tucson leads the series 4-1-2, sweeping both meetings this season.

This is the first year however that the two sides are not in the same division with FCT’s move to the Southwest Division and the Sol’s shift to the Mid South Division.

FC Tucson wraps up the regular season at home on Saturday against the Ventura County Fusion. A win would give Tucson their most points (35) ever in a single season. The 2014 side garnered 34 points (11-2-1).

It’s a 7:30 kickoff.
