Fight fans packed the Casino del Sol Events Center Saturday night for Noche de Boxeo.

More than 2,000 fans watched former unified lightweight champion Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz (42-4, 21 KOs) continue his comeback with a technical knockout of Cesar Vasquez.

Tucson’s Alfonso Olvera (8-2) won the co-main event. A six-round lightweight bout with Phoenix’s Jose Maruffo that went to decision in what was a complete slugfest.

2012 Olympics light heavyweight gold medalist Egor Mekhontsev (11-0-1, 7 KOs) suffered the first blemish of his pro career. He fought to a majority draw in an eight round bout with Alexander Johnson (16-4-1, 7 KOs).

In all six fighters from Southern Arizona were featured on the night’s card:

  • Jesse Ruiz (Tucson) d. Mike Martinez (Tucson) (decision)
  • Albert Alvarez (Tucson) d. Yomi Heredia (decision)
  • Jensen Ramirez (Tucson) draw Gerardo Avila (Nogales, MX)

New WBO featherweight champion Oscar Valdez attended the event. The Nogales, Sonora Mexico-born fighter won his first belt on July 23 in Las Vegas, Nevada when he knocked out Matias Rueda in the second round.
