Amphi hoops gets off the couch to beat Tucson

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Amphi High School is the champion of the first ever Tuscon Alumni Classic Basketball Tournament.

And the Panthers didn’t even know about the event until the day before it started.

Amphi led by 33 points from 2011 state champion Tim Derksen beat Tucson High 80-67 Sunday at The Sporting Chance Center.

It was the first year of the event that pitted alumni squads from 12 local high schools. Rincon-University, Sahuaro, Sunnyside, Canyon del Oro, Mountain View, Palo Verde, Santa Rita, Nogales, Cienega and Sabino also fielded teams.

The Classic was organized by Arizona State basketball alum Lester Neal ('93) and his wife April Garnett-Neal ('91), who played hoops at UA in conjunction with current Badgers boys basketball coach Daron Cross.

The couple held an initial Alumni Classic in Phoenix last month and will hold one later this month in Neal’s hometown of Chicago.

Derksen was joined by six of his state championship teammates from Amphi including Lester Medford.

Both Medford (Baylor) and Derksen (San Francisco) just finished up their college careers and will leave later this month to play professionally overseas.

Medford, who scored 14 points, will be playing in Hungary and Derksen in Spain.

Amphi also had a hefty contribution from Fred Sims who added 21 points. Tucson’s leading scorer was Pima College’s Cam Volk with 18.
