Waves crash down on Cats

Malibu, Calif. – In their season opener, the Arizona Wildcats fell to the Pepperdine Waves by a score of 3-1. Senior Lexe Selman Richards earned herself a goal in the 22nd minute of the game, but Arizona was unable to generate any consistent scoring chances after play resumed in the second half.

“I thought we did a good job in the first half and Lexe struck her goal well.” said head coach Tony Amato. “We put them under pressure and created some scoring chances. We never got going in the second half and Pepperdine took advantage, and we couldn’t get back in the game. We will work to fix the breakdowns we had today and play a better 90 minutes on Sunday”

In the seventh minute, true freshman Meredith Reinhardt made a save, but Pepperdine rolled the rebound past her. However, the goal was reversed on an offside call.

Jessie Nelson ripped a shot wide right of the goal at 14 minutes off a cross from Lexe Selman.

At 16 minutes, Gabi Stoian took a shot from deep outside the 18-yard box and forced Pepperdine goalkeeper Hannah Seabert to make a jumping save.

In the 18th minute, Stoian had another chance off a free kick from just outside the box, but Seabert was able to get her gloves on it.

Selman crushed a shot from the right side of the field and scored in the 22nd minute to put the Wildcats up 1-0.

Through the 26 minute mark, Arizona was able to stave off a series of attacks from the Waves in order to maintain their early lead.

In the 30th minute, Pepperdine’s Nicole Leggio managed to deflect a cross through traffic to level the score at 1-1.

Jessie Nelson earned herself some space in the middle of the field at the 34 minute mark, but put her chance over the crossbar.

In the 42nd minute, Cali Crisler got a shot off from a rebounding free kick, forcing Pepperdine’s Seabert to make a diving save across the mouth of the goal and push the shot wide.

After the second half resumed, neither team was earning a shot on goal, but Arizona was keeping Pepperdine neatly contained within their half of the field and maintaining good possession.

In the 59th minute, Pepperdine’s Rylee Baisden got an assist from Leggio to put the Waves up 2-1.

Leggio earned her second goal of the match, rolling a shot past Reinhardt in the 65th minute of the match.

Stoian forced Pepperdine’s Seabert to make a fingertip save in the 72nd minute from Jaden DeGracie’s flip throw.

At the 75 minute mark, Katy Byrne was awarded a yellow card for her dangerous play as Reinhardt made a diving save.

Stoian had a great look from the left side of the goal in the 80th minute, but Seabert was able to make a save across the mouth of the goal.

At the conclusion of the match, Arizona managed to push a few more attacking options forward but were unable to generate a goal to try to level the score.

Arizona is back in action on Sunday, August 21st, as they take on Utah Valley in Tucson, Ariz. at 6 p.m. PST.
