Final phase of interior demo limits access to Old Pima County Courthouse

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Monday, Aug. 22 marked the beginning of the end for the interior of the old Pima County Courthouse.  According to a recent release from the county the final phase began on demolishing the inside of the old courthouse, with officials saying the work should wrap up by Oct. 31.

This demolition is part of a larger overhaul of the historic building, according to the county this is the first time in 88 years it has been done.  Overall renovation of the courthouse, both interior and exterior is expected to last until summer 2017. The Board of Supervisors should vote on a contract at the regularly scheduled meeting on Oct. 18, with work beginning at the end of October.

Work will keep the public from the outside of the historic courthouse, due to the perimeter gates being locked. There will still be access to the sidewalk north of the building and the breezeway to the south, most of the time.

Two events have been planned for Fall that involve the courthouse, the first is the Tucson Meet Yourself that is scheduled Oct. 7-9 and the Fox Theatre Gala on Oct. 27, both are still expected to take place.  Cinema La Placita will also be hosting its last screening on Thursday, Aug. 25, this completes the programs 2016 season.
