OVERTIME: Sunnyside rallies late to beat Pueblo 10-6

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Roy Lopez’s first Sunnyside team already has a flair for the dramatics.

The Blue Devils scored on a 15-yard Joey Hernandez run late in the 4th quarter Friday night to beat Pueblo 10-6 for the new head coach’s first win at the school.

Sunnyside (1-1) had given up a late touchdown in Week 0 to lose Lopez’s first game at Nogales.

The defenses dominated this game all night.

The Blue Devils took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on a Jesus Santa Cruz 25-yard field goal.

It stayed that way till the second half when William Bertsch scored on a one-yard run for a 6-3 Pueblo lead.

A fateful miscues set up the winning score as the Warriors botched a punt attempt late in the game giving the Blue Devils the ball in their red zone.

The Warriors (1-1) will have a bye in Week 2 before returning to action on September 9 against Cholla.

Sunnyside travels to Buena next week.
