PIMA COUNTY, AZ ( Tucson News Now) -

The 14-year-old dog who was dropped off in extremely poor health at the Pima Animal Care Center has been adopted.  According to a tweet from Pima Animal Care, Maya went home with a woman who already owns another senior one-eyed Shih Tzu.

Maya was suffering from severe emaciation, neglected infections and a maggot infestation when she was surrendered by her owner in May 2016.  The owner was cited for animal cruelty and neglect for failure to provide medical care, and faced up to six months in jail, three year's probation and a $2,500 fine.

She pleaded not guilty and according to PACC, has been ordered to take an educational class on proper pet care.

“Maya is a wonderful example of how, because of our community’s support, we can save our community’s neediest pets,” said Karen Hollish, PACC’s director of development and marketing in a news release.

If you witness animal cruelty or neglect call and report it to PACC at (520) 724-5900.
