Authorities ID Pinal County inmates involved in stabbing

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The Pinal County Sheriff's Office released more information about an alleged attack by inmates that left two detention officers wounded.

According to a PCSO news release, two inmates stabbed a jail lieutenant multiple times in his torso and a third assaulted a detention sergeant in the incident on Wednesday, Sept. 7 inside the Pinal County Jail.

The detention officers were not identified, but the lieutenant is a 6-year employee of the sheriff's office. He was flown to a regional trauma center for treatment for his wounds. The sergeant, a 3-year PCSO employee, suffered a hand injury that did not require hospitalization when he came to the aid of the lieutenant.

The sheriff's office said the three inmates, Robert Villalobos, 29; Mauricio Moraga, 25; and Santiago Sanchez, 26, are all documented gang members. According to the release, Villalobos and Sanchez stabbed the lieutenant and Moraga assaulted the sergeant.

According to the release, Villalobos is in custody for 2014 charges of conspiracy to commit murder, robbery and weapons violations. Sanchez is in custody for a 2015 weapons violation. Moraga is awaiting sentencing for manslaughter.

Charges related to the attack, which remains under investigation, have not been filed.
