Lang reaches the 400 club

Oro Valley, AZ (KOLD) - When the 25th point was scored, the public address called out the magical number.

As in, with a four-set victory over Rincon/University, Bill Lang had reached 400 wins as head coach of Ironwood Ridge girls volleyball. How does one put that in perspective? Pretty easily.

"15 years of a lot of work with a lot of great players and great coaches."

The Nighthawks defeated the Rangers, 25-21, 22-25, 25-12, 25-22.

The records show (as far as we could tell) that only one other active coach has reached 400 wins with girls volleyball. Sahuaro's Sandy Novak who, as it turns out, has 2 more wins in her belt than Lang. And Novak stopped coaching girls in 2010.

It's a very select club. That it was accomplished so early with such a young team makes it even more impressive.

As Lang pointed out, Ironwood Ridge graduated 15 players over the last two seasons. Of those 15, 10 are playing collegiate volleyball.

"We have a lot of puppies," said Lang.

Puppies who have bought in.

"A lot of us didn't start off as a starter or even with the right mentality," said senior outside hitter Alexis Orth. "I know I wasn't one of them. I'm really happy to be a part of this. 400 wins means a lot."

And Ironwood Ridge is far from done. The Nighthawks have started the season 5-0 over notable opponents including reigning state champ Notre Dame prep, and state semifinalist Salpointe Catholic.

"I enjoy all my seasons," said Lang. "I enjoy all my teams we have here. But this year's been really memorable."

And from the looks of it, the memories are just beginning.
