The University of Arizona has a lot to be proud of. Scientists right here in Tucson are leading the OSIRIS-REx mission, which will eventually bring back part of an asteroid for study here on Earth. This is an example of what our universities can do with the right people and resources.
But bright moments like this for the U of A could be in danger if our state lawmakers continue to cut funding for our state universities. This year's budget gives them more - but it's still less than what the state Board of Regents was asking for. Students are paying higher tuition, which means more college loans, and more debt. State funding cuts are also making it harder for U of A - and other Arizona public universities - to compete for the top talent.
THINK ABOUT IT - investing in our state universities will reap big dividends in the years to come. It will create attractive, affordable colleges and draw businesses to Arizona that are interested in a competitive and educated workforce. That's a mission worth launching.
