19 Tucson, Oro Valley BASIS.ed students named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

On Wednesday, Sept. 14, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation named 82 Arizona BASIS students as semifinalists for the 2017 National Merit Scholarship.  19 of those students were from Tucson and Oro Valley. 

The students were from BASIS schools across the state, here is the breakdown: 

According to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation “to become a Finalist, the Semifinalist and his or her high school must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the Semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received.” 

In addition, “a Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT® scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.”
 
Finalists will be competing for three types of National Merit Scholarships:

  1. National Merit $2500 Scholarships
  2. corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards
  3. college sponsored Merit Scholarship awards
