Temporary closure of Colossal Cave Road for improvements

VAIL, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Beginning Saturday, Sept. 24 through Sunday, Oct. 16, Pima County Department of Transportation, the Regional Transportation Authority and their contractor, Southern Arizona Paving will close Colossal Cave Road at both the southern and northern railroad crossing. This work is part of the Colossal Cave Road: Acacia Elementary School to Old Vail Middle School improvement project.

Detour: South and North Track Closure Sept. 24 through Oct. 16 Colossal Cave Road north of the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) from Interstate 10 (I-10) will be accessible by using the Houghton Road exit (Exit 275) and traveling north on Houghton Road to Mary Ann Cleveland Way and traveling east on Mary Ann Cleveland Way to Colossal Cave Road and vice-versa.

The last point of access on Colossal Cave Road from I-10 (Exit 279) northbound is at the business center complex just south of the railroad tracks. Both Acacia Elementary School and Old Vail Middle School will have access.

 

This closure will allow critical roadway work to be performed, including the adjustment of roadway grade to improve sight visibility at Success Drive and across the railroad tracks. Access to businesses will remain open, although the southern and northern railroad crossing will remain closed to all traffic during these dates.

These additional closures dates will allow UPRR to work on both tracks and eliminate one of the three anticipated closures. The Vail community will be kept informed as the dates of future closures are scheduled. Please plan alternative routes during this closure and allow additional time for your travels.
Please approach the area with caution and obey all traffic control devices. Motorists are asked to seek alternate routes.
