COCHISE COUNTY, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Despite reports of illegal activity in the Huachuca Mountains nearby, officials with the Coronado National Forest (CNF) are informing the public that Brown Canyon Ranch, located on the Sierra Vista Ranger District is still open to visitors.

According to a Forest Service release, the Cochise County Sheriff's Office assisted the U.S. Border Patrol in the Brown Canyon area on Friday, Sept. 16 after the agents encountered armed drug smugglers.

The public should be cautions of their surroundings in areas such as trails, recreation sites, and dispersed camping sites, and they should let others know where in the CNF they are going to be.

Forest Service law enforcement officials are aware of the recent incident, according to the release and they stepped up patrols, and are coordinating closely with partnering law enforcement agencies to monitor the situation, share information, and keep the public informed.
