Jamarye Joiner’s return to Salpointe Catholic wasn’t easy but it was a success.
The (4A-#8) Lancers did their best to bottle up their former teammate but Joiner and the Bobcats rolled to a 55-14 win Friday night at Doherty Stadium.
(5A-#2) Cienega (6-0) remained unbeaten on the season.
Joiner, known more for his running prowess as a quarterback, threw for a pair of first half touchdown passes, both to Breaben Bolton as the Bobcats built a 23-14 halftime lead.
Bolton finished the night with six catches for 130 yards. One of those catches was a beautiful one-handed highlight reel grab.
Joiner made one critical mistake that for a moment gave the Lancers (4-2) new life in the second quarter.
The junior while being pursued on a rollout by Salpointe Catholic defensive end Cameron Tober tried to throw the ball away but instead threw the ball into the hands of the Lancers Caleb Eubanks who returned it for a touchdown.
The error cut the Bobcats lead to 16-14 after they had led early 16-0.
That would be the end of the errors though as Cienega rolled off 35 straight points after that.
Bobcats safety Terrell Huggins picked off three passes on the night while senior linebacker Chris Vega had a pair of sacks.
Aaron Sauls ran for a pair of Cienega touchdowns. Joiner also had a rushing touchdown in the first half.
The Lancers lone other score came on a seven-yard touchdown run by Trevor Volpe.
The Bobcats face Sahuaro and Buena in their next two games before what will likely by the Game of the Year in Tucson on October 21st when they visit Ironwood Ridge.
The Lancers travel to Walden Grove next Friday night.
