Alert neighbor helps Tucson police catch a suspected burglar

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The Tucson Police Department is thanking a vigilant neighbor for helping catch a suspect and stop a burglary in progress in an east side neighborhood. 

The incident began at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, when a neighbor called TPD to report a suspicious person in the 8600 block of East Colette Street, near East Speedway Boulevard and North Camino Seco.  According to TPD the caller noticed the man had been walking down the alley and appeared to have broken into a home in the neighborhood.  

TPD officers from the Operations East Division responded to the call and arriving on scene to find forced entry into the backyard and house.  According to TPD the suspect, identified as 49-year-old Ryan Hippensteel, ran from the house with property in hand, he was detained by officers without incident. 

Hippensteel was booked into the Pima County Jail and faces the following charges: 

  • 2nd Degree Burglary  - A Class 3 Felony 
  • Theft - A Class 5 Felony 
  • Possession of Burglary Tools - A Class 6 Felony 
  • Criminal Damage - A Class 6 Felony 
  • Criminal Trespassing - A Class 6 Felony 
  • Outstanding Parole Violation Warrant

    According to a STPD release, officers pulled over a Dodge truck with Sonora Mexico license plates for a traffic violation.  The driver was issued a citation for the violations and released.
