Deandre Ayton was back in Tucson on Saturday but this time everyone in the Pima College West Gymnasium knew who he was.
Ayton and his Bruins from Hillcrest Prep Academy returned to PCC for a second straight year for a pre-season scrimmage against the Pima Aztecs men’s basketball team.
When the Bruins came to town last year most eyes were on Marvin Bagley, the Phoenix guard largely considered to be the #1 player in the Class of 2018.
Bagley is now gone to a high school in Southern California.
Ayton, the top player in the 2017 Class, committed last month to Arizona pushing what was already a Top 5 in the nation recruiting class for head coach Sean Miller all the way to #1.
Ayton draws comparisons to a young Kevin Garnett. He averaged 30 points, 19 rebounds and six blocks last season for Hillcrest Prep Academy.
The five-star recruit joins four-star commits Brandon Randolph (Yonkers, NY), Ira Lee (Los Angeles, CA) and Alex Barcello (Phoenix, AZ) on the Wildcats’ ledger. Lee announced this past Wednesday his intention to attend UA.
