PHOENIX (Tucson News Now) -

It’s not a Cubs like drought but it’s over.

Salpointe Catholic’s girls’ volleyball team beat Phoenix Greenway 3-1 (25-23, 20-25, 25-21, 25-16) Wednesday night at Mountain Pointe High School to win the school’s first ever (4A) state title.

The Lancers were making their first state title appearance in 46 years (1970).

Salpointe Catholic lost to Safford in straight sets that season.

The victory was also the first state championship for a Tucson school since 1993 win Rincon-University completed an undefeated (26-0) campaign beating Scottsdale Chaparral.

Maggie Schepelmann led the Lancers with 20 kills. Alanna Duarte added 17. Duarte and junior setter Peyton Lewis each had 27 digs. Lewis finished the night with 53 assists. Salpointe recorded seven blocks as a team.

The title comes in Heather Moore-Martin’s third season at the school. She arrived in 2014 after leading Catalina High School to the Division III state championship match in 2011.

Greenway (40-4) had won the Division III state championship in 2015.
