According to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, some of these homicides could be considered justified. That means investigators found a person was either trying to defend themselves or someone else. These also include officer-involved shootings.

The PCSD said the numbers typically fluctuate from year to year.

One of the deadliest starts was in 2007, when eight people were killed in Pima County alone.

The PCSD said it’s hard to tell what exactly contributes to the number of homicides. Some are domestic-violence related and others could be with people involved in criminal activity.
