2017 off to a deadly start in Tucson, Pima County

It's shaping up to be a deadly year in southern Arizona.

The first two months of 2017 have been the deadliest start to a year in the past four years.

According to the Tucson Police Department, there were five homicides in January and February. There were three homicides during the same time frame last year and five in 2015.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said it didn’t investigate any homicides in the first two months of 2015. They investigated three in 2016 and five in 2017.

The Marana Police Department didn’t have any homicides in January and February 2015 or 2016 and had one in February 2017.

According to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, some of these homicides could be considered justified. That means investigators found a person was either trying to defend themselves or someone else. These also include officer-involved shootings.

The PCSD said the numbers typically fluctuate from year to year.

One of the deadliest starts was in 2007, when eight people were killed in Pima County alone.

The PCSD said it’s hard to tell what exactly contributes to the number of homicides. Some are domestic-violence related and others could be with people involved in criminal activity.

    The person of interest in the double-murder and bank robbery in Conway on Monday is in custody. Brandon MIchael Council was arrested in Greenville, North Carolina Wednesday, along with two other people, authorities there confirmed.  Brandon Michael Council was wanted for questioning in connection with the murder of two CresCom bank employees during a bank robbery at the CresCom Bank in Conway on Monday afternoon.
