TEMPE, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The Arizona State rugby player accused of kicking a defenseless University of Arizona player in the face during a match told police he wasn't sorry and showed no remorse.

According to court documents, 20-year-old Christopher Jordan Crawford was arrested Feb. 28 on an aggravated assault charged after initially refusing to turn himself in.

The alleged assault happened Feb. 25 during a match in Tempe.

The 20-year-old Crawford kicked the UA player in the face when the UA player was on the ground tying his shoe, according to police.

The UA player was knocked out, transported to a hospital with a concussion and had facial reconstruction surgery, when a metal plate and six screws were inserted into his face.

Crawford told authorities he was acting in self defense after the victim punched him during a play.

Authorities reviewed video of the game and could not find the alleged punch.

Referees told authorities the assault was "the worst thing they have ever seen in their history with rugby."

Authorities said Crawford ran off the field after the kick and changed into street clothing before a referee could eject him from the game.

Crawford was asked to turn himself in but authorities said he told them he wouldn't and that they would never find him. He self reported a few days later.

According to court documents, Crawford has a warrant from the Tempe Police Department on charges of obstructing a court order and false reporting.

Crawford, who is homeless, was given a $5,000 bond.
